Stopped reading Winer

Perhaps it hasn't been obvious but about a month ago our main contributor stopped sipping the Winer wine or whine. Just can't take it anymore. Finito. At least for now. However before making such a momentous announcement we needed to wait for a couple of things to happen and now they have.

First Dave Winer kicks off the Bastards of Blogs series. Some great artwork and a valuable trading card to keep in store.

Second, or really first but listed here second, a new site sprang up out of another blog on this service. In the future when we have something to say it will go on the EyeOnWiner.org site. Farewell for now.

According to Scripting News this morning a snarky post is one where a professional blogger/journalist in a speciality market asks why Dave Winer gets press passes for that speciality market when the poster does not.

Then the site goes on to try and pour gasoline on the flame war with Adam Curry.

This morning brings a new gem from Scripting News. A new attempt by Dave Winer to fan the flames. For somebody who claims to hate flame wars he sure uses a lot of gasoline.

What is truly laughable is this bit "it actually was a company turning a Wikipedia page into an ad for itself." Funny that just a few days ago he endorsed just such a person. Take a minute to read the page on Dave Winer, who has made himself a brand and the controversy about the editor's role in trying to rewrite history -- apparently a virtue if you rewrite the way Winer wants it to be.

Of course this is to be expected from a person who has no compunction about linking to business associates and himself as authoritative sources on topics without any disclaimer.

Dave Winer: Linking to incorrect information

Dave Winer oft waxes on about needing media to be checking facts. Today, however, he links a CBS News story that got it wrong. In explaining the dust-up between Adam Curry and Dave Winer it says that Curry's poor choice in editing Wikipedia it says "at the same time pumping up his own role."

Not actually. The rest of what they say is true, Curry edited out someone else's contribution. He did not make edits to "pumping up" his own role. The take-away seems to be - facts matter as long as they support Winer. If they don't then it is just fine to play fast and loose and Winer will jump on the ~~band~~ flame wagon.

Dave Winer: I was conned

Dave Winer now says he was conned. He appears careful never to say who did the conning, possibly attempting to avoid a libel suit, but there is little doubt he refers to his current to-do with Adam Curry. As we noted recently Winer is fanning the flames in an old beef with Curry. It's funny that Winer, who is well known for posting provocative statements and then taking them down in an effort to play the victim, got caught by Adam Curry who has just been busted for editing the Wikipedia in a way Winer doesn't like.

The best part is where Winer claims it was a bug in the software, that he wrote and oft proclaims as the gold standard.

Dave Winer admits podcasting was Adam Curry's idea

Through a series of posts where Winer has been taking advantage of Adam Curry's Wikipedia jam to take pot shots at Curry. However, in the rush to try and flame Curry Winer makes an interesting admission. In the comment where Winer tries to fan the flame war says "as I recall it -- he explained the idea to me, had to do it over and over because I was so dense, and then didn't say anything other than How do we do this?"

So there we have it. While audio blogging existed before Curry's script and his was a second, independent effort, Winer acknowledges that it was in fact Curry "the Podfather" who came up with the idea for Podcasting and engaged Winer to work on the technical spec.

Blind to RSS's shortcommings

It is pretty funny to see this post. Funny in a sad sort of way. The eWeek article that Dave Winer doesn't understand is clearly understood by the posters on his website. Further, this has been a problem with RSS since day one. As far as we can tell Atom doesn't solve this. Search Feedster and you'll find tons of hijacked feeds, some innocently some maliciously. Sometimes one is so intent on believing their creation flawless they seem to be totally blind to its major shortcomings, and want credit for all the good and place blame for the ill their pet project creates.

Stop the presses! Dave Winer actually links to somebody who says Adam Curry produced the first podcast. Of course leave it to Dave to throw fuel on the fire... Remember it's fine for Dave to flame others just not for them to do the same to him.

Who wants to bet that at the end of the day it will be found that somebody, possibly anybody made edits by forging Adam Curry's IP address. Too bad people believe that Wikipedia's IP address auditing is fool proof.

So I've done it more than once. You hook your iPod up to the wrong computer and wipe the library. When Dave Winer does it somehow it's Apple's problem. What it really is has to do with the way Dave migrated from one computer to the other. Plug an iPod into a foreign computer and it won't do a thing until you answer if you want it to. Plug it into your computer where you've previously set it up to sync, even though you took away the music library, and it will do just what you say. Only there won't be any music to load on to it. What would you like Dave? A mind reader iPod. So would we all.... I'd like it to tell me what I want to listen to in a few hours and purchase it too.... And while we're at it why doesn't the iPod Cyborg interface work to have my iPod cook dinner too?

The Dave Winer Solution

Dave's been making noise about how he could have done WordPress better and how it's such a step backwards. Funny last week he was whining about people who make such observations about his company.

The Winer solution would be to shut down the whole WordPress project, turn off everybody's sites and then depend upon volunteers to save his ass. Or rather that's what he did.

Apparently there is a lot to read between the lines in this article. Or that is to say when Dave Winer reads it the story is totally different. That's fine Dave. While you whine about wanting credit for Adam's work he'll be making a living.

Meanwhile a great write up of the Dave Winer spin machine is over at geekable.com. The truly amazing part is Winer hasn't deleted the original posts yet. Rest assured he'll change them soon to try and make others look the fool and likely find a way to blame Tim O'Reilly in the process.

User interface

Yesterday Dave Winer complained about Firefox again. The root of the complaint is that Firefox is making itself consistent with the Mac OS X interface. Dave argues instead that since every other Mac application works the way it is designed to, Firefox should instead make itself work like Windows.

Now, take a moment and think about that. Dave Winer, who claims to have great software design experience, suggests Firefox should take a great big dump on 90% of their users to help 10%. Admittedly the 10%, well except for Dave Winer, are the ones who could find the directions and change the preference most easily. The choice boils down to this:

1) do it so it works for those users who use Firefox just on the Mac and make it work like every other properly designed Mac OS X application, or;

2) Make it easy for somebody who is a die-hard PC user to switch back and forth.

If this is the thinking that goes into the products at Userland and Scripting News can we expect that they will have a good User Interface? I am doubtful.

Another reinvention

It seems Dave Winer doesn't understand podcasting. Winer who claims to have invented Podcasting (though the truth on this subject is more complex) doesn't understand that it's not about a format. Several great podcasts use formats other than mp3 files. They are none-the-less podcasts.

One is left to wonder, again, when the ego will stop and Dave will get on the truth bandwagon? Not that the truth has ever been much of a concern to Winer. If you acknowledge Dave as the greatest ever internet inventor you're "a part of the conversation" in his book. Think otherwise? You're a know-nothing critic.

Dave Winer posted a whine this morning about how Macs don't automatically change the time when we spring forward or fall back. Horseshit. Of course not wanting his ignoranums to be exposed for the stupid igiot it is he later modified the post to make it look as though he was meaning to have it say change your clocks tomorrow. So of course we'll document it here that masterful programmer Dave can't figure out what day it is.

Dave Winer is once again claiming as his own ideas that Apple has already implemented. Expect shortly to hear about how Apple has stolen his wonderful idea. It is also quite telling that Winer claims to have held publication of his idea at Microsoft's request. As if we needed proof where Winer stands it's now clear his interests are not in what is best for computer users but where he thinks he can make a buck. Do you think his recent sale of Weblogs.com for millions of dollars had anything to do with his unilateral decision to shut down customer's blogs. You bet it did. With those blogs running the service would have been a much less attractive target.

Just because they didn't ask Dave

According to the latest "I told you so" post on Winer's site Yahoo is ahead because they talked to users and the users didn't leak the info. He suggests Apple, Odeo and Podshow should take notes. Perhaps, Dave, if you weren't so self-absorbed, you might stop and think that the people who did the consulting and represented users with those companies actually took their NDA's seriously and said nothing about it instead of flaunting it. As a matter of fact we know there were outsiders involved with Apple's launch of iTunes. Just not the ones Dave wanted.

By the way. Dave, you claim to be such an expert. Why should companies invite you for a user's perspective? That's like asking Steve Jobs to provide feedback on a new line of computers as an average consumer or Warren Buffet to say whether an investment tool is easy enough for the average user to understand. Too bad Yahoo! didn't go for some real user feedback. Maybe if they were looking for an API they should talk to you but never when they are looking for a user's perspective. Remember Weblogs.com? Remember all the protestations that Dave didn't screw customers? That's what it looked like from his angle. Completely reasonable. Sane. Those on the other side undoubtedly have a rather different memory of being told to bend over and grease up. At least Davey didn't get to screw up Google's web feed reader.

Rules are for others

Dave Winer posted an explanation of why it is OK for him to attend and participate in secret events but events are not OK if they don't include him. "It's a fine line," Winer says in trying to re-define the meaning of double standard. Ironically he also claims, incorrectly that Apple didn't consult Podcasters before the release of iTunes 4.9 and that "he had no idea the software was coming". Duh. Dave and some person lost in the jungle for months would be the only ones who could have missed the pre-release hub-ub. But those people who did the consultations with Apple had NDA's that they honored. And of course worst of all for Dave's ego they did a great job without any input from Dave Winer.

After the I'm Not Dave post yesterday Dave Winer corrected his original post to note that it is his RSS aggregator, not the IT Conversations feed that is hosed. Of course he still wants them to fix it. But that is really just more about trying to bash Adam Curry in public for not letting Winer ruin his new venture.

It is a really sad day when the spec you contributed to is working just fine and you can't figure it out. Dave Winer whines today that the PodShow folks maintaining the Gillmor Gang feed are doing it wrong. Thing is, Dave, the RSS is valid. Even Dave's own validator says so.

What Dave Winer is unhappy about is the lack of content in the Title element of the RSS feed. All the spec says is that the title element must be present, not that it has to have a length greater than 0. This is particularly funny as at the item level Dave notoriously leaves off the optional title element. Again it's legal. Legal doesn't make it a good practice or make your feed understandable.

Dropping off the A-list

Dave Winer has always considered himself an a-list blogger. He's quite willing to tell everyone how he invented blogging and that nobody did it before he did (a flat out lie by the way). Now along comes Technorati with their second web spam summit. Winer said Thursday "I'm going to try to be at this discussion". Oh what a difference a few days makes. Now the story is that Winer wasn't invited so the conference is a bad idea and Winer's new line is "I'll probably keep my appointment, and skip the summit." Plenty has been written about how divisive Winer can be and why he is considered by many conferences to be an influence that doesn't lead to constructive work.

Wake the fuck up Dave. Just because you are so self-absorbed doesn't mean life stops for everyone. Congratulations to the folks in New York who are continuing on with their lives. Thankfully there isn't the absence of diversions that marked the weeks following 9/11. Dave Winer seems to think that 9/11 was "an instant event". Whatever. So sorry you don't understand it was months not an instant.

Here's the deal. Let's pretend for a moment it was anywhere close to a good idea to cancel the US Open. Fine. Done. Now what? What in the hell do you expect the people to do? Should they all get in their cars and head to New Orleans? Should they sit at home and do nothing? Where was your condemnation of the celebration of New Year's in the west while the cleanup from the tsunami was still progressing? I'll bet you will find some sick way to suggest this terrible tragedy has a personal impact on you. That is, after all, the American way.

So Dave, sit in your room, convince yourself that if you're not too stingy you can give them a few bucks, and watch CNN. But for the love of Christ, shut-up.

There is an amazing Foocamp post over at Dave's site. Apparently any conference where he doesn't determine who gets in shall be considered a Stalinist event. For a while I've written about some of the crazy things that go on in Winerland but this is just beyond the pail, even for delusional thinkers. Perhaps it explains why Dave prefers lowest common denominator events to events thoughtfully constructed meetings with a list of participants designed to keep the discussion interesting and everyone engaged.

Please, oh please, Tim, invite Dave. See how fast he backpedals and comes up with some bullshit excuse about how he's going to Foocamp as a sacrifice for his readers.

Giving users the shaft

Dave Winer is posting the terms for his upcoming OPML product. It is summed up with this part of the statement "you assume all risk, and I assume none". In 1998 Winer wrote about the BOGU philosophy at Microsoft.

One of the things I used to admire about Microsoft is a philosophy called BOGU, which stood for Bend Over and Grease Up. It was a reminder that they would take it up the butt for the bigger prize.

Now, however, the shoe is on the other foot. History shows Winer expects other companies to BOGU when it is to his benefit. When instead it is his product and his company the customer (what other companies consider their users but Winer doesn't) is supposed to BOGU. So let's see how this will play out. Winer will release something that is a pretty interesting idea. He'll screw the users and somebody else will re-invent it with the users in mind and get traction in the market. Then Winer will whine about how he's been screwed.

Don't believe it? It pays to look at the history:

Userland Frontier - Winer's company Userland (which he ran at the time) first makes their product available for free. Builds a large user base, gets contributions from many developers for free and then slaps them with thousands of dollars in licensing fees if they want to continue to access their data.

Then there is the Weblogs.com story. Winer pulled the plug and did so in the most contentious way possible.

The moral of the story is that you'd better take Dave Winer at his word and assume that he'll do everything possible to wipe your data out when it least suits you. All with some sort of explanation about how necessary the change is.

When the company fucks up

Dave Winer aptly describes why the customer is always right.

Too bad he didn't know this when his company told all its customers, many of whom had been enthusiastic supporters to bend over and take one up the rear. The arrogance of the company in slapping its legions of supporters with a tax of a thousand dollars a year destroyed a community overnight. Years later he'd give back the part that was taken away, minus some community developments, but nobody would care since they'd been reamed.

The pattern is the same time after time. Winer supports openness unless it gives people a chance to comment on his work. Funny that he's never bashed mashups which do the same kind of "content modification" with other people's creative works but somehow doesn't deserve the same protection.

In a post Dave Winer calls out the Associated Press for not having an online archive. He calls them hypocrites for an article that points out future employers may look at blog postings and goes on to note that there is not an AP archive. If he were a stickler for facts (and he's not one to let a fact or two ruin a good story no matter how absurd) he'd note that there are plenty of archives available of the AP and most other newspapers. What is true is that they aren't available to Winer for free. Waaahhhhhh. Poor Dave. What an idiot.

I'm the first to say I like companies that put archives online and hate the absurd fees charged by the likes of West and Lexis Nexus. These super-accumulators of data have such a lock on the archives that they charge whatever they like. While we're at it is there anybody in the room that believes TurnItIn.com isn't compiling an archive of every AP story? Of course they too keep it under an expensive lock and key.

Credit where credit is due?

Brent Simmons has a post where he clearly says he's not claiming credit for Dave's OPML editor. What is clear, however, is that Simmons wrote some of the early code that is included. So in Winer's twisted theory it means Simmons should be getting the credit from the media. However, now Winer seems to have a new set of rules.

Dave Winer tells the Boston Globe today, "I don't take money, period," by way of comparing the terrible things his former partner Adam Curry is doing.

Wait! Don't take money, period? Hogwash! Simple lies. I don't know that I've often called anyone a liar before but this is a lie as plain as day. Winer took money from Curry for listing Curry's site in his software. Winer took money from the many who provided free development on the free and open version of Frontier and then started charging out the wazoo for it. Now he thinks somehow that Curry's invention should earn him money too. Winer is selling ads on web-spaces that are clearly designed to siphon business away from Curry. What a small person it must take to have an ego so large.

Just when it seems like Dave Winer could not sink to a new low we're proven wrong. Dave's bitch-slap of former partner and prince of podcasting Adam Curry is amazing.

The problem really starts with Dave wanting credit for anybody who does anything online with audio and a portable player. Dave, please show us your version of iPodder. No, not a bunch of scripts for a scripting environment where I have to completely add a bunch of new programs, but where you started distributing content using a single simple script that works with existing tools. When you can show us we'll buy the act. Until then credit where credit is due. Since we're on the topic, Dave, you did not invent audio on the internet. Production values that are far enough down as to need a mining claim does not make good radio, regardless of how its transmitted. Just because you can belch on the radio and leave your damn recorder on because you can't figure out how to use a device as simple as an iPod, doesn't make a podcast any good. In fact it makes us stop listening.

Hint, if you want people to listen to what you have to say get a Mac and use text to speech. The increase in quality will more than double the audience for morning coffee notes. Until then most people who live real lives will continue to get information through other sources - i.e. you'll be filtered by Adam and those that can produce a good show.

The Curry-Winer breakup

Public Secrets puts the timeline of the Dave Winer - Adam Curry breakup in print. Many have speculated about what happened between the two who were headed towards collaboration when Curry shared credit for his Podcasting invention with Winer (and yet forgot to credit Al Gore for making the internet to begin with and Paul for his early blogs to the Christian church). Until a meeting in Florida where it all fell apart. The pair's last podcast was an embarrassing assault of the thought police deciding who should be allowed to do what with their shows. Then things fell silent until Dave Winer announced he was moving all Curry's shit off his servers.

Once again Uncle Davey is talking about things that have worked for years as "future inventions". Dave Winer suggests today that somebody will have to come up with a podcasting alarm clock. Dear Dave, it's called iTunes. If you had a real MP3 player you'd know it too. Course you might have to take a scripting lesson from your ex-buddy Adam Curry if you want to add features. Whoever "invents" it for you of course you'll take the credit.

OK the rest of the world knows RSS stands for several things including RDF Site Summary and Really Simple Syndication. Now comes Dave Winer in a lame attempt to steal podcasting credit. Podcasting was developed by Adam Curry using technology that Winer and others developed. Now as in today's post, Winer is retitling his Morning Coffee Notes podcast with the word podcast linked to his MP3 file trying to drive traffic to another one of his phony sites. Dan Gillmor has already pointed out that this kind of forgery is not tolerated in the real media, but in Winer's brave new world of no-credibility required it works just fine evidently.

Dave Winer is quoted in this BBC story saying RSS is a way for websites to alert you when they have new content. Huh? All this time I thought RSS was a pull technology Come on Dave can't you do better than that?

The BBC story is also rife with incorrect facts ranging from what RSS stands for to the suggestion by omission that the Atom format is not the prevalent format it is. I guess this must be the piece Dave Winer whined enough to get them to do after the good piece they did on Podacsting recently.

Our buddy Dave Winer needs a primer on copyright. The poor fellow is now attributing not only his quotes to made up sources, but they now have their own copyright. See here where www.podcatch.com claims a copyright. Just what company is that? Oh, that's right there isn't one. Not to mention that whoever the mythical www.podcatch.com is they are claiming copyrights on other people's work. In the end this all probably goes to why Dave feels DRM is a bad thing.

So the EFF is wrong when Davey wants to be paid for his work but right when recording artists and labels want to be paid for theirs. Somehow Davey equates a friend loosing a thousand buckeroos with Apple's iPod. Never-mind the numerous times that Apple has told its users to back up their data. Hmmm that must not count.

Davey please take your whining and use it elsewhere. Perhaps someday you can provide some good feedback that will help a product get better instead of continuing to criticize it for things it does just fine. It seems you whined a long time about not being able to fast forward or rewind an iPod. Maybe you finally figured out it is not hard. Please Dave, get a non-iPod. You'll love it. It won't work for shit, it will be something you use a month and then loose, but at least it won't be an iPod... And make sure you get Micro$oft Media Player instead of iTunes. Obviously a much better choice. In case you didn't realize Micro$oft does DRM too.

Okay, I'm embarassed to admit that I've never been able to figure out how to create a new user on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. Anyone have a good howto that doesn't require me to take a course in system administration? I just want to give someone access to my FTP server without giving them the password for the Administrator.

Dave got rejected by Google News today. To think the little one-line posts on Dave's site won't be clogging up the works at Google News. Best of all, he suggests they are wrong in saying only one person writes his site. Excuse me? Would you show us a single example of another author? Sure there are links to other's works, Dave Winer does like to borrow heavily from others' work. But there is no hint of other authors. Even many of the linked "sources" are nothing more than the Dave Winer echo chamber. Somebody sure should bring back Winerlog.

So Dave created something useful (actually he's contributed to the creation of several things) but now he's out done himself. Today he decided to take the name of a document format and make it the name of his new product. Great just because he created the format he can fuck it up for the rest of the world. Don't worry though, Big Brother Dave will be happy to tell you when somebody does something they shouldn't .... just trust in Dave. He'll save the internet from Microsoft and Google by taking the glimmers of light like OPML and making sure they go out permanently. What's next a news reader called USENET? On one hand Dave Winer says that the evil Big Media companies doesn't do enough to disclose their conflicts of interest. Today dishonest Dave does the same thing. We're treated to a snipe about how O'Reilly conferences are "like rock shows". It is convienient that Dave forgets to mention he's not invited to speak at the conferences, that he has a huge axe to grind with O'Reilly and most critically that O'Reilly conferences compete directly with Winer's own Bloggercon shows.

But wait, you say, Winer doesn't profit off the Bloggercon shows.... Oh, but he does. He even said as much in the last one in the session on making money. He laid out his view that blogs make LOTS of money and the model is exactly that of Bloggercon. Use an elitist gabfest, in the guise of a populist gathering of techies to promote Winer's bottom line disallowing everybody else to say anything commercial, while Winer accepts the credit for the "successes".

At least Winer is "honest" enough to keep Glenn Fleishman's comment on Scripting News even when the comment has been struckthrough on Fleshman's site. Turns out Fleshman was man enough to admit there is more to the story and allows the possibility of more dialogue. Winer, just like a big-media pro, wants the sensational spin instead of the real facts.

Dave Winer pulls one of his latest tricks today. Perhaps it grows from his dissatisfaction with "other" places not getting him all the self-congratulatory credit he believes he deserves. At any rate one of Winer's favorite sources is now 2WW (TheTwoWayWeb.com). So there amongst the posts citing the BBC or other credible sources is 2WW. It turns out, after some sleuthing, (or just reading the page) that the quotes attributed to 2WW are from none other than Dave Winer. And critics say that one of the blogosphere's problems is it can be an echo chamber. I wonder where they came up with that one???

Often a proponent of openness and the "unedited" form of blogs. Dave Winer really does a lot of editing. Publishing inflammatory statements and then taking them back when nobody is looking.

Anyway, I don't like that they don't even mention me on their blog. This is the usual thing in the tech business. Reinvent something, and pretend that it was an original idea. It worked for Evan with blogging, in most places. Can we keep this one from being wrapped up by one vendor? Let's hope so. BTW, Odeo has a blog.

Among the more absurd things Dave has said it the absurdity that there were 4-5 blogs in 1997. What? Are you saying I was the only blog publisher in 1997? Thanks Dave. The truth, as born out by a meander through the internet archive is that there were many more and that Dave's 1997 Frontier News Page was by no means the first. He did some great work with Clay Basket, Frontier and some of the later tools. But there were many more than 4-5 webistes that qualify as blogs in the same revisionism that calls Scripting News a blog as of 1997.
